Examinations are performed by our director, a gastroenterology specialist certified in gastrointestinal endoscopy. Please tell us about all medicines you take before the examination.

Gastroscopy with Sedation

Sedation can make the examination more comfortable. Biopsy and Helicobacter pylori testing may be performed when needed. Gastroscopy is also available through the national stomach cancer screening program.

Colonoscopy

Polyps found during colonoscopy may be removed. Liquid or tablet bowel preparation is discussed when booking, with detailed instructions. Gastroscopy and colonoscopy can be performed on the same day.

The Day Before & the Day of Your Examination

  1. Do not eat after dinner the evening before. Water or tea is permitted until bedtime, unless your individual preparation instructions state otherwise.
  2. On the morning of your examination, do not eat, drink water, smoke, or chew gum.
  3. Current medicines: Do not stop medicines on your own. Instructions for blood pressure medicines, diabetes medicines, and insulin depend on the examination and its timing. Tell us what you take when booking and follow the medical team’s instructions.
  4. Before gastroscopy, an anti-foaming medicine and a topical throat anesthetic are given.
  5. Gastroscopy usually takes 2–3 minutes. Biopsy or Helicobacter pylori testing may be added when needed.
  6. Food is usually permitted 30–60 minutes after the examination, as instructed by the medical team. Start with soft foods. Activity restrictions after sedation or treatment still apply.
  7. Do not drive on the day you receive sedation.

Can I take blood pressure or diabetes medicines that morning?

Do not stop medicines on your own. Instructions for blood pressure medicines, diabetes medicines, and insulin depend on the examination and its timing. Tell us what you take when booking and follow the medical team’s instructions.

What if I take aspirin or another blood-thinning medicine?

Do not stop aspirin, clopidogrel, warfarin, or a direct oral anticoagulant on your own. Any adjustment depends on the possibility of polypectomy and your risk of thrombosis, and should be discussed with the prescribing medical team.
